What this letter is

A cancellation letter is a written notice ending a membership, subscription, contract or service. Many gym, timeshare and service agreements require written notice and set a notice period before the cancellation takes effect — and a good number specify how that notice must reach them, commonly by mail to a named address, occasionally by Certified Mail. Where an agreement names the method, notice given another way can be treated as no notice at all, so it is worth reading the cancellation clause before you send anything. Even where a phone call is allowed, a letter is what stops the "we have no record of your request" loop, because you hold a copy and, if you send it Certified, a record that it arrived.

What to put in it

Your name, the account or membership number, and the address on the account.
The address your agreement names for notices — if it names one, use it.
The exact service, membership or contract you are cancelling.
The effective date you want the cancellation to take.
Any earlier cancellation attempts, with dates and who you spoke to.
A request to stop all future billing and to confirm the cancellation in writing.
A request for a refund of anything charged after your first cancellation request, if that applies.

Plenty of agreements do not just require written notice — they name the method, and mail (sometimes Certified) is what they name. Cancel any other way and the contract's own terms may say it never counted. A letter satisfies the clause on its face, lands at the cancellation address the contract specifies rather than a support queue, and Certified documents the date it arrived — which is what matters when billing continues and you need to show when you asked it to stop.

They keep billing me after I called. Does a letter help?

A letter gives you a dated written record of the request, which is what a company's own dispute process, your card issuer, or a small-claims court will ask for. If you end up disputing the charges with your card issuer, the FTC advises putting that in writing too, even if you already disputed online. We can't promise how a company will respond, but we can make sure the request exists on paper and, with Certified Mail, that its delivery is documented.

Where do I send it?

Give Genie the company name and it searches for a mailing address, checked against postal databases before you pay. If your contract names a specific cancellation address, enter that one instead — it usually controls.

How fast will it get there?

Letters are typically handed off for mailing within 1–2 business days, and most First-Class letters arrive about 3–5 business days after that. Times vary and are not guaranteed, so allow lead time before any notice deadline.
